Alexander Haig Dies at 85
Posted on February 20th, 2010 4 commentsFormer U.S. Secretary of State Alexander Haig, a four-star general who served as a top adviser to three presidents and ran for the office himself, has died.
Haig died today at about 1:30 a.m. at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, where he was surrounded by his family, according to two of his children, Alexander and Barbara.
Haig’s long and decorated military career launched the Washington career for which he is better known, including top posts in the Nixon, Ford and Reagan administrations. He never lived down his televised response to the 1981 assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan
General Haig exemplified our finest warrior-diplomat tradition of those who dedicate their lives to public service. After his remarkable and decorated career, Haig decided to launch a television career, and for almost a decade he hosted “Alexander Haig’s World Business Review.” The show first ran on PBS before settling down on CNBC.We’ll miss his rapid fire wit, and all of the great stories he would tell about the Nixon and Reagan years, but most of all… we”ll just miss him.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.
